AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM
THE MISSION The Afterschool Program is designed to promote safe, healthy fun in a creative and challenging environment. Because children need the latitude to select the activities in which they will participate, there are many choices available during the Afterschool Program-arts and crafts, outdoor and indoor play, cooking, constructive and dramatic play, exploration of nature, and science activities. Making these choices encourages important decision-making skills and invites creativity. King Street's vision for the next century embraces the fundamental belief in the value of all children. We want to continue being partners in a community that acknowledges the increasing challenges facing children and accepts responsibility for helping meet those challenges with determination and commitment. THE PROGRAM The
Afterschool Program consists of two different types of days. Monday,
Wednesday and Friday are Activity Days, while Tuesday and Thursday are dedicated
to Club Days. Activity Days are designed to give children the option to
choose the activity they wish to take part in. They include Homework Help,
Arts & Crafts, Cooperative Games, Sports, Field Trips, Cooking and Special
Events. Club Days provide the children with an opportunity to form a club
with their peers. As a group, the children make decisions, set rules, and
plan special activities. The clubs are facilitated by a staff member
who fosters positive decision making skills. King Street collaborates with many outside organizations to enhance its Afterschool programming opportunities. These partnerships include Shelburne Farms, Flynn Theatre, and Burlington Schools. King Street also works directly with Sports and Fitness Edge to offer Kids on the Move, a year-round developmental tennis program. Children who choose to participate in this program receive a tennis lesson once a week. We are also fortunate to partner with our area colleges and university and benefit from academic internships, as well as numerous student volunteers. HOURS AND TUITION The Afterschool Program is offered to children in kindergarten through 5th grade and is attended by children from various Burlington elementary schools. This licensed program runs from 2:30-5:15pm and a snack is provided. There is a weekly fee of $20 for each child attending the Afterschool Program. Child Care subsidy is also accepted. KING STREET SOUTH In September 2004, King Street launched King Street South, a small satellite program at Champlain Elementary School. Children who participate in this partnership program have the opportunity to enroll in Burlington School's enrichment programs.
