Afterschool Program Playing Tennis

The Mission
The Afterschool Program is designed to promote safe, healthy fun in a creative and challenging environment. Becausechildren need the latitude toselect the activities in which they will participate, there are many choices available during the Afterschool Program-arts and crafts, outdoor and indoor play, cooking, constructive and dramatic play, exploration of nature, and science activities. Making these choices encourages important decision-making skills and invites creativity.

King Street's vision for the next century embraces the fundamental belief in the value of all children.  We want to continue being partners in a community that acknowledges the increasing challenges facing children and accepts responsibility for helping meet those challenges with determination and commitment.

The Program
Children arrive at the Afterschool Program and meet in their age-group's room, either the Mermaids & Turtles, Dolphins, or Zebras. In their groups, children participate in an afternoon meeting, have snack, complete their homework, and engage in free-choice play. At 4:00, children transition to choice-time, an opportunity to engage in activities based on interest. Some choice-time activities include arts & crafts, computer skills, rock climbing, tennis, basketball, and free-play in the quiet-time room.

King Street collaborates with many outside organizations to enhance its Afterschool programming opportunities.  These partnerships include Shelburne Farms, Flynn Theatre, and Burlington Schools.  King Street also works directly with Sports and Fitness Edge to offer Kids on the Move, a year-round developmental tennis program. We are also fortunate to partner with our area colleges and university and benefit from academic internships, as well as numerous student volunteers.

Hours and Tuition
The Afterschool Program is offered to children in kindergarten through 5th grade and is attended by children from various Burlington elementary schools.  This licensed program runs from 2:30-5:15 pm, and a snack is provided.  There is a weekly fee of $20 for each child attending the Afterschool Program. Childcare subsidy is also accepted.
